This week Entertainment Weekly released images from the upcoming live action Beauty and the Beast, making us even more anxious for the film’s release. The pictures reveal many secrets, including how the Beast, Lumiere, Cogsworth and Mrs. Potts would look in real life. We also get a good look of how costume designer Jacqueline Durran brought Belle’s iconic yellow dress to life. Durran is known for her work on period pieces including Pride and Prejudice, Atonement and Anna Karenina for which her designs earned an Oscar. While the animated version had hints of gold, the live action version is a vibrant yellow. The textures and intricate designs make it fit for one of our favorite Disney princesses. We’re also impressed by the epic set design of the film. Check out those large crystal chandeliers and gold framed floor-length mirrors. We’re having major dress and home envy from this picture alone.
The live action Beauty and the Beast will be released on March 17th, 2017 and stars several high profile actors. Emma Watson has won the coveted role of Belle, the small-town dreamer who helped release the Beast of his course. The cast includes Dan Stevens (Downton Abbey) as the Beast, Luke Evans (The Hobbit) as Gaston, and Josh Gad (Frozen) as Le Fou. The cast also features an impressive list of voice actors lending their pipe’s to the film’s beloved enchanted objects. Ewan McGregor (Mulan Rouge) was cast to voice the dashing and debonair Lumiere, Emma Thompson (Love Actually) will play the motherly tea pot, and Sir Ian McKellin (X-Men) voices the strict but kind hearted Cogsworth. Alan Menken is back, working with Tim Rice this time, to bring new songs to the already impressive list of compositions.
Disney released an image of the concept art for Cogsworth and Lumiere several weeks back. We weren’t too pleased with the way they portrayed Lumiere in that rendition, but the final product is definitely an improvement. While the original was closer to the animated Lumiere, this candle stick captures Lumiere’s human form well. Not sure why Mrs. Potts is so tiny in this image, but I’m sure it’ll be addressed in the film.
In this picture we see the Beast and Belle staring at a book. This isn’t a scene from the animated film, which has us wondering what it represents. The Beast’s library looks smaller and darker than depicted in the animated feature, but just as lavish. Belle is wearing her opening scene outfit, so we suspect this scene happens earlier on in the film. There are some noticeable differences between the live action Beast and the animated version. The Beast in the live action film has larger, more prominent ram horns. Despite his beast form, the prince certainly has style.
