The History

The Landmark London has a celebrated history. In 1894, Sir Edward Watkin – known as “Last King of the Railways” – wanted to combine railway lines to create the Great Central Railway, Marylebone Station and a grand hotel to service its passengers. In 1897, the architecture of the hotel was commissioned from Col. Robert Edis. At the time several luxury hotels were popping up throughout London, including the Savoy and the Hotel Cecil which established high standards of luxury and magnificence. Edis designed the hotel around a vast courtyard, twice the size of the one in the original Savoy, which would allow light into the guest rooms.

During the World War I, hotel attendance suffered and in 1914 the hotel was turned into a convalescent home for officers. The hotel reopened after the war, and thrived again. Since then the hotel has been at the center of many important moments. Including the capture of SS member James Brady. Today, the hotel is considered one of the best places to stay in London.

The Location
