Shanghai Disneyland: 5 Moments from Opening Day
Opening Day Was Sheer Magic in Shanghai
By now you’ve probably been bombarded with images and video of opening day at Shanghai Disneyland. The ceremony required the hard work of hundreds of employees, but it was nothing short of magical.
While no bride or event planner wishes for rain, it’s often seen as good luck. That’s how Vice Premier of China Wang Yang saw it. Opening day guests were met with a drizzle, but that wouldn’t stop them from enjoying the park and the festivities.
Here are 5 moments from Opening Day
A Choir Takes the Stage
The festivities began with a multi-generational choir taking the stage in front of Shanghai’s fairy tale castle to perform “When You Wish Upon A Star.” The song embodies much of what Disney is all about. It was the perfect song to perform when introducing the world to an amazing theme park that took over 17 years to open.
A CEO Shares His Dream
Disney Chairman and CEO Bob Iger addressed the crowd in Mandarin and English saying, “Together we have created an extraordinary destination, a magical place unique in all the world, where East meets West, the past meets the future and anything is possible for those who believe. It is our sincere hope that this spectacular place will inspire wonder and create joy for the people of China for generations to come.” The park does truly combine East and West, mixing Disney magic with traditional Chinese culture. Or as Iger explains it, “Shanghai Disneyland is authentically Disney and distinctly Chinese.” Iger stated several times that it was his dream to open a theme park in Shanghai. Seventeen years ago he stood on the plot of land where the park now stands today, imagining what they could create.
A President Gives His Congratulations
Iger also shared with the crowd a letter from President Barack Obama which stated that, Shanghai Disney Resort blends American business with the beauty and rich cultural heritage of China. The letter also noted that the resort “captures the promise” of the bilateral relationship between the U.S. and China.
A Famous Mouse Gets a New Wardrobe
Mickey and Minnie also made a grand entrance wearing their new costumes. You won’t see Mickey in his signature red and black tux. Instead Mickey dons a sharp blue and gold ensemble, complete with gold vest and shoes. Likewise, Minnie’s red and white polka dot dress has been moved to the back of her closet as she opts for a bright pink dress with gold detailed hemline.
An Opening Day Gets a Grand Finale
No Disney celebration would be complete without a grand finale. To close the opening day ceremony fireworks were ejected from the spires of the castle. A festive performance took place on the stage in front of the castle, as dancers waved colorful flags, twirled with shimmering skirts, and danced with some of our favorite Disney characters.
